So it should be no surprise that it's also a time when our skin can take a real beating, thanks to the heat, humidity, and harmful UV rays that abound during these months. If you want your skin looking and feeling it's best all summer long, than you will need a solid skincare routine that can stand up to the elements. Here at Cloud 9 Wellness Spa, we've got you covered with our top tips for the best summer skincare routine. So grab your favorite cleanser, moisturizer, and SPF. Let's get started!

First things first: double cleansing is key.

This technique involves using a pre-cleanse (such as micellar water or Dermalogica’s Pre-Cleanse) to remove makeup, dirt, and other impurities from the skin, followed by a traditional cleanser to deep-cleanse and purify the skin. Double cleansing is especially important during the summer months, when sweat, sunscreen, and other environmental factors can clog pores and lead to breakouts. By removing all traces of dirt and oil from the skin, double cleansing helps to keep your complexion clear and radiant all season long.

After cleansing, it's time to moisturize.

Even if you have oily skin, it's important to use a lightweight moisturizer during the summer months to keep your skin hydrated and healthy. Chelsea Falconer, lead esthetician at Cloud 9, recommends gel-based moisturizers because, "they're a great option for summer, as they are lightweight, non-greasy, and quickly absorb into the skin." SPF, SPF, SPF!!

  • 1) Choose a SPF 30 or higher.

    2) Apply sunscreen 15 mins before going out doors.

    3) The average adult needs 1 oz (one shot glass full) of sunscreen to cover their whole body.

    4) Apply to ALL bare skin: face, ears, back of neck, tops of your feet and legs.

    5) To remain protected when outdoors, reapply sunscreen every two hours, or immediately after swimming or sweating.

Absolutely! Studies show that UV rays can penetrate through windows and cause damage to the skin even when you’re indoors. One study published by the AAD found that people who spent considerable time near windows had more signs of sun damage on the left side of their face and body, which is the side that tends to get more sun exposure when driving or sitting near a window. Another study by the Journal of Investigative Dermatology found that UV rays can penetrate through window glass and cause DNA damage to skin cells.


What to avoid during the summer:

According to Chelsea, it’s best to avoid starting retinol and Vitamin-C serums during the summer because “they cause vulnerability, and can do the opposite desired effect.” So if you haven’t started those prior to the warm weather, then it’d be best to leave it to the Autumn when the sun’s rays aren’t so harsh.
